UNDERSTANDING THE EVIN SYSTEM

Several years ago the Porter County Fire Association adopted a master listing of all emergency vehicles operating within the county. A separate and distinct identification number is assigned to each piece of emergency response equipment operating within the county on a routine basis. To emergency workers, these numbers are more commonly known as EVIN numbers.

A multi-digit identification code has been assigned to every emergency response unit able to utilize the Porter County 911 Dispatch Center. Numbers 1 through 499 were reserved for county police agencies. Fire department numbering begin with the number 500. Each department has been issued a minimum of 200 EVIN numbers to utilize. The first one or two digits of the number identify the department or agency, while the last two digits identify the type of unit. Here is a listing of the type of units:

01 thru 09 identify Fire Officers

10 thru 19 identify Engine Companies

20 thru 29 identify Truck Companies

30 thru 39 identify Rescue Squad Companies

40 thru 49 identify Water Tanker/Tenders

50 thru 59 identify Utility Apparatus

60 thru 69 identify Ambulances

70 thru 79 identify Grass/Brush Apparatus

80 thru 99 identifies Firefighters

Lake Eliza Fire has been assigned the 2300 thru 2499 series of EVIN Numbers. Our Station is designated #2300. The Fire Chief is #2301, while the Deputy Chief is #2302. Captains are designated #2303 & #2403, with Lieutenants carrying the EVIN numbers #2304 & #2404. The department Safety Officer is identified as #2307.

Beginning with the #2380, each firefighter is also assigned a EVIN number that remains with them throughout their entire career. A member of the department who is promoted would utilize the Fire Officer designator instead of his/her personal EVIN number when utilizing radio frequencies. At Lake Eliza Fire, emergency medical technicians are assigned EVIN numbers between #2480 and #2499.

Hopefully, this information will answer many questions the department has received concerning the numbering of our apparatus.
