John has been a firefighter with the department since October of 2003. Prior to that, he had been with Union Fire-Rescue for the past 18 years. During his time at Union, he had served two separate terms as the department's Training Coordinator as well as holding every rank in the department except Fire Chief. John began his fire service career with the City of Lake Station Fire Department in the spring of 1978.
John is certified as Master Firefighter in the State of Indiana in Tatics, Management, Inspection, Instruction and Investigation. He is also an NFPA Instructor II/III, Firefighter I, Fire Officer I, Fire Investigator I and Fire Medic IV. A certified PADI Advanced Open Water diver, John is also the Deputy Director of the Porter County Fire Investigation Strike Team (FIST).
Certified as an Emergency Medical Technician since 1974, John completed his Paramedic training in 1982. He is employed as a career Paramedic/Firefighter with the South Haven Fire Department, and has been with the department since 1983 except for a period between 1991 and 1996 when he held the position of EMS Supervisor for Bethlehem Steel's Burns Harbor facility. John currently holds the rank of Deputy Chief of the South Haven department.
